PROTARAS

Protaras, the tourist area of Paralimni is less than a one-hour drive from Larnaca Airport. Situated on the South Eastern coastline it is renowned for its glorious golden sandy beaches. With the beautiful clear blue sea and a wide range of water sports Protaras is an ideal location for both families and lovers of a beach ‘n’ surf holiday.

With numerous tavernas, bars and first class restaurants to choose from there is absolutely no need for you to "slave over a hot stove". In fact you’ll be spoilt for choice. For the younger generation there are two or three discos in Protaras however the serious ‘clubber’ should give Ayia Napa a visit which is about 15 minutes drive away.

Ayia Napa is well worth a visit during your stay anyway. The beaches here are also excellent and the harbour with its colourful fishing boats is a delight. The 16th Century Venetian Monastery here rubs shoulders with the newly built church, both of which are of exceptional architectural beauty. Do try and find the time to visit both.

Between Ayia Napa and Protaras there is a rugged stretch of coastline called Cape Greco. It is of outstanding beauty and solitude with tiny coves and inlets and a few very large caves. Here you can truly get away from it all.

Within the surrounding area of Protaras and Paralimni you will find that traditional farming is still very much an important part of the local community. Hundreds of windmills are dotted around which pump up water from underground wells to irrigate the surrounding fields. Wherever you cast your eyes you will the abundant fruit and vegetables that are grown in the rich red soil of the area.

Take a trip into Paralimni a lovely old village dominated by a huge church. The people here are very friendly and the shopping for souvenirs is a pleasure treated more like a social visit by the locals. There are also plenty of tavernas where you can enjoy typical Cypriot dishes at very reasonable prices.

Lastly don’t forget to go to the village of Derynia. This is on the border with Northern Cyprus and provides views of the deserted ghost town of Famagusta from platforms overlooking the area.
