PAPHOS

Paphos was once the Roman capital of Cyprus, the surrounding area is steeped in history. There are many historic sites providing evidence of the presence of the Ancient Greeks and subsequently the Romans. Try to find the time to visit the House of Dionysus with its beautiful mosaics and the famous Tombs of the Kings.

A drive through the countryside to Polis, Latchi and on to the Akamas peninsula is highly recommended. This is an area of exceptional beauty and is still very unspoilt. North East of Paphos is the majestic Troodos mountain range. A visit anytime of the year is always very memorable with breathtaking views, tiny picturesque villages, colours, and smells that assault the senses.

Paphos itself is split into two parts, Kato (lower) Paphos, the New Town and Ktima (upper) Paphos, the Old Town. Kato Paphos is centred on the colourful harbour, bright with fishing boats where you can find excellent fish restaurants. There are numerous tavernas and bars along the quayside that offer a lively nightlife for visitors.

Ktima Paphos is a short drive inland and is centred on its mouth-watering market where there is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as excellent fresh fish and meat, which would tempt the most jaded palate. If you are looking for gifts to take home, there are also plenty of shops specialising in leather, jewellery, lace and local crafts.

Several small beaches are to be found in and around Paphos but the best beach in the area is called Coral Bay. It has exceptionally soft golden sands and is ideal for swimming and water sports. It is just along the Tombs of Kings Road going towards the village of Peyia, a short bus ride from the centre of Paphos.
